Lemont, IL - The Lemont Police Department announced today that Occupant Protection Enforcement Zones will be conducted in the Village from November 13 to November 29, 2009. The enforcement zones will coincide with the National and State "Click It or Ticket" Thanksgiving Holiday Mobilization. This special enforcement period is part of the state's annual effort to increase occupant protection use through a combination of highly visible aggressive enforcement, advertising, and public awareness campaigns.
The Lemont Police will be looking for drivers and passengers who don't buckle up and that includes drivers who fail to properly restrain child passengers. Motorists should expect to encounter Occupant Protection Enforcement Zones during both Daytime and Nighttime Hours.
The goal of the "Click It or Ticket" Mobilization is not to give out tickets, but rather to influence people to buckle up to prevent injuries and fatalities. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for Americans between 4 and 34. In Illinois 1,248 persons were killed in 1,129 fatal crashes in 2007. The average cost for a critically injured survivor of a motor vehicle crash is estimated at $1.1 million over a lifetime. This figure does not even begin to reflect the physical and psychological suffering of the victims and their families.
Illinois has a primary seat belt law which requires that every occupant in the vehicle be properly restrained at all times. If stopped and found in violation, Lemont Police will issue tickets without warning. Tickets for occupant protection violations range from $50 to $750 dollars.
This project is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
