Odor Reporting Procedure

If you believe there is an immediate hazard to health and safety, contact the Fire Department by calling 911.

If you wish to report a complaint or noxious odor report, but it is not an immediate hazard, do not call 911, but use the following reporting processes:

The IEPA recommends that complaints get filed online with their office at the following link - https://epa.illinois.gov/pollution-complaint/submit-a-complaint.html.
The Lemont Odor Alert Network (OAN) has also been established to provide local support to help reduce outdoor odor problems and has been successful in these efforts since its inception in 2005.

The IEPA and Village recommend that in addition to filing online complaints with the IEPA that you also send an email with your complaint to the Lemont OAN at OAN@lemont.il.us to ensure the report is received by the OAN as well. Include the following information to assist in the investigation of the odor:

Required: Date and Time when the odor was detected
Required: Location where the odor was observed
Required: Description of the odor to the best of your ability
Optional: Contact name and phone number

During normal business hours, the OAN Coordinator will attempt to assist the IEPA with the investigation of the odor report and forward information to the IEPA. OAN will also follow up with the complainant if contact information was provided. The data received will be important for reporting and sourcing purposes.

The key is to report the odor immediately. Waiting longer than 15 minutes may be too late to identify the source unless the odor is prolonged.

Lemont is the first municipality in Illinois to establish a management system called the Odor Alert Network (OAN) to respond to odor complaints.
